Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has entered an innocent plea to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and hindering a legislative process.

Mr Comey's lawyer filed the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney stated he would attempt to have the case terminated for various reasons including that his the accused, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pressured his top legal official to proceed against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald told the judge they planned to file several motions to dismiss the case before a court case, claiming the legal action was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully appointed to assume control of the case.

Mr Comey's case was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from Trump after his examination into an additional opponent - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was accompanied by his spouse, Mrs Failor and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the court recite his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he comprehended the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about several months into the former president's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was leading an investigation into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the presidential campaign.

While in office, the director triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he stated just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was examining Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a private email server. Charges against the candidate were not filed, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he deceived the Senate by saying he had not permitted someone at the FBI to disclose to media organizations details about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media Mr Comey published to his social media after he was accused, he said he was not guilty and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"Our household have understood for a long time that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."

"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

These allegations against James Comey emerged after the former president published on social media demanding his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and others.
