Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World

The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the first new weapon introduced into the title since the mace made its debut. The lance is finally here and it could very well change how you play Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also adds a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had long felt it was time for a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we desired a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," noted a lead developer. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the intended purpose."

If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your allies on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action excellently designed for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest use cases for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and get more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the wings and going out and creating genuine chaos," she teases.

In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it deserves to be an Olympic sport right away.

Another key feature in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This underwater creature, which is modeled after the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it transport you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also conserve your oxygen levels, so there's no need to surface for oxygen.

The other inclusions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus appearing in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.

"We've long considered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also bring in something for underwater," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus concept art looked striking, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also notes that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Further inclusions include the Parched, desert-exclusive skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford bodies of water while mounted on a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the best defense it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

In summary, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear alone — and the pandemonium it invites — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Throw in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mounts of Mayhem update is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
