British Foreign Office has placed 11 more nations to its official alert register about the threats of methanol toxicity from adulterated beverages.

The revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Just recently, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, after a number of high-profile events including the fatal loss of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in blindness or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical typically used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.

However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Official Advice for Tourists

Foreign Office official a senior official emphasized that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits abroad, choose well-known venues and avoid unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer advised.

"In case something appears suspicious, for example a hangover that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention fast."

The full roster of countries identified as posing a risk of industrial alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
