Unmasking Venezuela Victory Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.
Synthetic graphics claiming to show Venezuela's president detained following his capture by the US have garnered countless of views online.
How AI Images of Maduro Appeared Within Hours
Initial inauthentic AI image apparently displaying him taken off a plane circulated shortly after. The graphic was unpublished by any verified American sources; rather, it was posted on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, confirming the image was created or altered with Google AI.
Further AI-generated visuals were disseminated in the ensuing hours, appearing to show more angles of the leader in custody. Discernible watermarks on the graphics reveal they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
AI analysis indicates these additional images were also generated or edited generative models.
Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Persisted
Donald Trump shared the genuine photograph of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. Yet following this real photo was made public, synthetic pictures continued to spread but were updated to incorporate the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation indicate these updated fakes were initially shared on the video platform by a graphic design account. Again, analysis found the new graphics were produced with generative artificial intelligence.
